The island of Karpathos

Karpathos is the second largest island of the Dodecanese (twelve islands) and is placed on the southernmost part of the cluster. Karpathos has an area of 301 sqkm and is situated between the islands of Rhodes and Crete. It is a mountainous island with a characteristic thin and long shape. The villages are located on the green slopes of the mountains and around its small and traditional harbors.

The beaches of Karpathos are something the visitor won't find in many Greek islands. Virgin beaches, crystal and clear waters, with sand or tiny pebbles, untouched by human activity.
Variety and harmony compose fascinating scenery and an unforgettable destination. Karpathos is characterized as one of the most beautiful islands of Greece. With amazing natural beauty and respect for the environment, Karpathos is today one of the islands of the Dodecanese that still retains its traditional character. Tourism in Karpathos

Cultural tourism has always been the main interest of foreign visitors. Karpathos deep rooted culture, dialect and attire of the people living in the village of Olymbos has remained the same for over a thousand years. History, art, architecture, religion, and other elements that helped shape their way of life have stood still in the passing of time.
Ecotourism or ecological tourism. A large number of Mediterranean seals have sought refuge at the island, especially northern Karpathos and Saria. Non-governmental and non-profit organization “Mom” aims to the protection of the Mediterranean seal. Its action includes research, protecting and attending to injured, sick or orphaned animals, creating protected areas, and informing and sensitizing habitants.


Sport tourism is on the rise for Karpathos island. Karpathos Afiartis area has become the home of many beginner as well as advanced windsurfers which visit religiously every summer.
In addition to windsurfing, organized diving excursions are attracting many interested in exploring the spectacular underwater beauties surrounding the island. Hiking has always been popular on the island and recently Karpathos Hiking Club organizes weekly events. The canyons in the northern part of the island have satisfied the adventurous of rock climbers.

Today, Karpathos is the ideal travel destination for those seeking a quiet but full of history and tradition island for their holidays. Karpathos is linked with Athens, Rhodes and Crete by frequent and direct air flights and sea connections and internationally via the international Athens airport.
